Named after Avatar Studios in New York City (previously known as The Power Station) where it was recorded,
the album was produced by Danny Kortchmar. Working together, Danny and Mossy mined a reef of classics
including Standing In The Shadows Of Love by The Four Tops and Shake by Otis Redding,
and unearthed forgotten gems that oozed ageless charm.
“I’d never even heard Any Day Now by Chuck Jackson until Danny played it to me, but you instantly recognise
it as a great song. It’s classic soul that’s still going to sound fresh to an audience’s ears.”
They even took a fresh slant on familiar songs, injecting rich soul to BB King’s great blues ballad
Hummingbird.
The first single from the album is a double A–side featuring a rocking version of Shake
(originally by Otis Redding) and Ian’s take on Let’s Stay Together (originally by Al Green) a track some
might remember from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack.
While the feature of the new album is Ian’s voice, he couldn’t let his guitar work take a back seat.
“There’s still a few nice moments on the guitar from me,” he adds, pointing to his raucous workout on
a vintage Gretsch to close out Shake.
Soul on West 53rd is out on Liberation Friday 16 October and you can catch Ian live on his Shake It Up national tour.
